More from our Machine Embroidery Retreat

Continuing with more reporting from Group 1 of our Machine Embroidery Retreat last week.

Embroidering on paper and cards proved VERY popular and students enjoyed the novelty of sewing directly onto Tri-Fold Cards with matching envelopes.

Stitching over Sulky's Puffy Foam gave a three-dimensional effect and using a "rubber-like frame" for delicate fabrics was explained.

Sewing sheer fabrics and sewing over pile fabrics such as towels demonstrated that not one stabilizer should be used for every situation.  Understanding stabilizers is a very important part of our tutoring.  When to use which one and why is explained in much detail.

Novelty items like making embroidered "gift soaps" and embroidering on Lutrador, RainbowSpun gave the students an immense thrill as unusual possibilities were shown.

Rainbow Transfer Paper opened new frontiers for all sorts of applications, for machine embroidery and hand embroidery.
Isn't the result so effective?  Variations of this method were shown too.  Shown here is white polyester thread transformed into a rainbow effect by ironing on the Rainbow Transfer Paper
Next blog I'll show you some of the finished projects from Group 1, Machine Embroidery Retreat.

If you'd like to join us in September 2011,
an expression of interest list has already been commenced.

  1. Judy I am very interested in the Machine Embroidery retreat. I live on the Sunshime Coast and I am enquiring about the transporting of my sewing machine to the retreat as I would have to to fly and wondered if there are special rules or concessions because of the weight.
    I have a Bernina 830
    many thanks Pat

  2. Great Pat, have had many who fly into Wagga and we can meet you at the airport. The Bernina 830 (lucky you) is a very heavy and large sewing machine (as are many others) so I wouldn't like to transport that on the plane for sheer questionable handling, but many have brought their machines on the plane. Enquire at Qantas re specially-cared-for-delicate luggage as it is too large for cabin luggage. 23kg is your maximum all up for regular luggage. I can loan you my own Bernina 1640 to use, though that maybe defeats a little of the purpose. The other option would be to team up with another student from Brisbane who may be driving down and share the costs by travelling together by car. I'll help whereever possible. Judy
