More Quilts from Brisbane Show

Do you like a Challenge?  Qld. Quilters were given a piece of fabric and challenged to produce a work of art using same.  Here are the three winners though everyone's was a delightful result.

Lorraine Carthew is one Australian Quilter Extraordinaire and her entry of  "FLOWER POWER" at the Brisbane Craft & Quilt Fair earlier this month was another credit to her long list.  Lorraine was awarded First Prize. Featuring Raw Edge Applique using the 'colours' rather than the 'images' in the challenge fabric to create the portrait seen here.  All machine quilted.

Rosemary McCall's "SCORCHED" was inspired by the fields of flowers fused with the colours and drama created by natural disasters throughout Australia.  Quilted, appliqued and scorched edging.  Rosemary was awarded Second Prize.

"PARTY DRESS" by Jane Rundle was awarded Third Prize.  Jane said her piece was inspired by a flower garden.  She used free applique and free motion quilting.  A discarded curtain overlaid on the background.  (See, you should never throw anything away!)

I always keep my eyes open for quilts that I feel will help inspire my students of my Online Classes and I thought I'd share them with you this time instead of only emailing those students.  I hope you marvel at these entries and likewise congratulate those who inspire us all, like these will.
Two quilts for the Curve Master students who have studied variations of many quilts using curved piecing.

Kerry Dobson called her Drunkard's Path Quilt "LABOUR OF LOVE" and said indeed it was.  Can you imagine the hours and hours Kerry spent, first of all machine embroidering the fabric, then cutting and making?  Kerry said if it wasn't for her sheer love of both passions she may have given up long before it was ever finished.  Well done Kerry for sticking to it.  It is absolutely brilliant and so innovative.
Just take a good look at the close-up photos I took and you'll understand why it is indeed well named.  She actually embroidered plain fabric to create the fabric design!

My "Curvers" have been dissecting designs using the Curve Master Presser Foot to sew them and having fun creating new designs.  Here is a beautiful quilt made by Susan Winship called "CIRCLE PAUA" which is similar to what we've taught.  Susan says: "Based on Louisa L. Smith's technique of creating a strata (colourwash) to go with a base fabric.  The strata is then re-cut and stitched together.  All Machine Pieced and Quilted.

Note all the strip-piecing before the pieces were cut to shape.

TOMORROW I SHALL COMMENCE SOME REPORTS FROM
THE INTERNATIONAL QUILT MARKET AT HOUSTON, TEXAS, USA.
